PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY

David McCarty-Caplan, PhD (he/him) is a researcher, evaluator, and consultant with over 12 years of experience leading mixed-methods studies and program evaluations that support educational innovation, workforce development, and institutional equity. Holding a PhD in Social Work with a specialization in organizational and educational analysis, David partners with colleges, schools, camps, and community-based organizations to improve access, learning outcomes, and systems of support -- especially for historically underserved populations.

David’s expertise includes program evaluation, policy analysis, curriculum design, and inclusive organizational development. He specializes in translating complex data into actionable insights to guide program design and strategic decision-making. His clients include educational institutions, Jewish communal organizations, social service agencies, and national initiatives focused on racial equity and justice. David also brings culturally responsive and equity-informed approaches to support efforts serving Jews of Color, LGBTQ+ communities, and adoptees.

 

He previously served as Associate Professor of Social Work at California State University, Northridge (2015–2023), where his work emphasized anti-oppressive pedagogy, policy analysis grounded in critical theory, and culturally responsive research.

PERSONAL BIO

David was born in Bogotá, Colombia and adopted into a Jewish American family - an experience that deeply informs his understanding of identity, belonging, and social justice. As a Jewish adoptee of Color, David brings a lived awareness of the complexities that come with navigating race, religion, and family across cultural and communal lines.

This personal foundation fuels his work as a researcher, educator, and consultant committed to equity, inclusion, and healing. David supports individuals, families, and organizations in exploring adoption, racial identity, and systems change, with a focus on creating spaces where people feel seen, affirmed, and connected.

He lives in California with his spouse and two children, where he enjoys gardening native plants, cooking food that connects him to his roots, playing backyard soccer, and taking walks with the family's two dogs and two cats.
